International triumph for Zonnebloem
09.11.2009

Zonnebloem, one of South Africa?s most enduring wine brands famous for its bold reds, has excelled internationally by scooping a Best in Class gold medal with its opulent Zonnebloem Shiraz Mourv?dre Viognier 2006 at this year's International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.
Made of classic grape varietals found in the Rh?ne region of France, this winning wine is a rich melange of 83% Shiraz, 12% Mourv?dre and 5% Viognier grapes. The Zonnebloem Shiraz Mourv?dre Viognier was one of only 10 South African wines to be awarded a Best in Class gold medal at this stringent competition where only 5,5% of the participating wines were awarded gold.
?This ruby red wine shows an abundance of ripe berry and plum aromas on the nose with nuances of oak spices, whilst the palate is full and rich with a complex mixture of berry flavours, gentle tannins and integrated wood spices,? is how red winemaker Bonny van Niekerk describes her award-winning Rh?ne blend.
It is the perfect taste partner for game or red meat dishes or just savour it unaccompanied.
One of South Africa?s first major wine brands, Zonnebloem dates back to the early part of the 18th century. Today the time honoured tradition lives on from the vineyards, tended by the same families for over three generations, to the meticulous craftsmanship in the cellar. The result is an illustrious range of wines slowly coaxed to perfection until they are released at optimum quality. These full-bodied wines are well-structured to show varietal character with rich, robust flavours, yet remain accessible and easy to drink with a soft palate.
The Zonnebloem Shiraz Mourv?dre Viognier 2006 retails at around R65 per bottle from leading wine outlets countrywide.
