Double Gold glory for two Fleur du Cap Unfiltered reds at Veritas

Fleur du Cap red wines are back in the limelight with two of the ultra premium Unfiltered wines ? the flagship Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2006 and newly released Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 ? scooping Double Gold medals at the prestigious 2009 Veritas Awards.
Overall, Fleur du Cap stood out as one of the top achievers at this year's competition with a total medal tally of 20 for its wines from the premier Unfiltered range as well as the Bergkelder Selection ? two Double Gold medals, two Gold, eight Silver and eight Bronze.
Fleur du Cap's two Double Gold medallists are amongst the top 2% at Veritas this year with just 40 wines out of 1 728 contenders capped with the competition?s ultimate mark of distinction.
Gold and Double Gold status is nothing new to these top Fleur du Cap Unifltered reds with earlier vintages excelling at a number of leading wine competitions including past Veritas competitions and the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. The success of these expressive wines can be attributed to the hands-on approach at The Bergkelder by red winemaker Justin Corrans, whilst his rigorous barrel selection ensures plump wines brimming with concentrated fruit flavours.
The Veritas Gold medals went to the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2007 and the prized Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2007. This noble wine also excelled earlier this year with a Michelangelo Grand D'Or medal and is one of the Noble Late Harvest wines that secured an amazing 5-star hat trick for Fleur du Cap in the prestigious Platter's South African Wine Guide.
The newly released Veritas Double Gold Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is a robust wine with seductive aromas of blackcurrant, jasmine, vanilla, dark chocolate and mocha on the nose. The palate has complex red fruit flavours supported by cherries and plums enhanced by a spicy oakiness and supple tannins. This complex wine is the ideal taste partner to fillet of beef and roast lamb but is equally delicious with rich, robust dishes and strong-flavoured cheeses.
